Understanding Binocular Vision Dysfunction

Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) occurs when the eyes are slightly misaligned — often by an amount too small to detect in a routine eye exam. Even tiny misalignments force the brain and eye muscles to work overtime to make the two eyes work together, to keep vision single and clear — and leading to headaches, dizziness, anxiety, reading difficulty, and many other symptoms that often feel unexplained.

When the eyes don't point to the exact same place, the brain works constantly to force the images together. This extra effort can overwhelm the visual system — especially during reading, driving, scrolling, or being in busy environments — resulting in dizziness, headaches, motion sensitivity, nausea, eye strain, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.

This short video shows how small eye misalignments can create big symptoms.

Why Routine Eye Exams Miss BVD

Traditional eye exams focus on how clearly each eye sees, not on how precisely the two eyes work together. Because BVD often involves extremely small misalignments, these issues can be completely invisible on standard tests. Patients are told "your eyes are healthy," even if the visual system is struggling to stay aligned.

Routine eye exams focus on clarity, not alignment. Learn more about what we check during an Eye Exam.

BVD Is Especially Common in People With EDS, POTS, MCAS & Chronic Conditions

Many of our patients also live with conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), POTS, MCAS, dysautonomia, chronic migraines, vestibular disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and sensory processing challenges. These conditions can make the visual system more sensitive — meaning that even a small eye misalignment can create significant symptoms.

NeuroVisual Medicine is uniquely effective for these patients because TheraLens® micro-prism lenses help calm the visual system, improve balance, reduce visual overload, and often bring rapid relief from dizziness, headaches, and nausea.

If you’ve been told your symptoms are “just POTS,” “just anxiety,” “just EDS,” or “part of your chronic illness,” yet nothing has fully explained your dizziness, headaches, or visual strain —

BVD may be the missing link.

1. What symptoms does BVD cause?

BVD can create dizziness, headaches, motion sensitivity, nausea, difficulty reading, neck tension, difficulty in busy environments, and a sense of visual imbalance. Even a tiny misalignment can disrupt comfort all day.

2. How do you diagnose BVD?

We use NeuroVisual Medicine testing to measure subtle eye misalignment that routine exams miss, and we also assess for other conditions that can cause similar symptoms to make sure nothing is overlooked.

3. How do micro-prism lenses help?

TheraLens® micro-prism lenses gently redirect incoming images so your eyes and brain don't have to work overtime to stay aligned.

4. How quickly will I notice a difference with TheraLens® micro-prism lenses?

Many patients experience relief within minutes to days. Others experience gradual improvement over a few weeks as the brain adapts. TheraLens® micro-prism lenses must be worn full time for consistent treatment.

What is NeuroVisual Medicine?

NeuroVisual Medicine is a specialized field of optometry focused on diagnosing and treating subtle eye misalignments that disrupt the connection between the eyes and the brain.

Using specialized NeuroVisual Medicine testing, it reveals misalignments that routine eye exams cannot detect — often the root cause behind dizziness, headaches, anxiety, reading difficulty, motion sensitivity, and other life-disrupting symptoms.

We also coordinate with your healthcare providers so they understand your diagnosis and can support your treatment plan.

TheraLens® Micro-prism:
Precise Treatment for BVD

TheraLens® micro-prism glasses gently redirect incoming light so the eyes can work together without strain. Even a tiny prism adjustment can realign the visual system, reducing the effort your brain and eye muscles have been using to maintain clear, single vision. Many patients notice relief from dizziness, headaches, anxiety, reading discomfort, and motion sensitivity — sometimes within minutes of trying the lenses.

Dr. Moller uses highly precise measurements through NeuroVisual Medicine testing to customize each TheraLens® prescription for your unique misalignment.

  • Reduces headaches, dizziness, & visual anxiety

  • Improves reading comfort & concentration

  • Supports immediate & long-term visual stability

Many patients experience immediate relief during the neurovisual exam when trial micro-prisms are placed in front of their eyes — confirming that their symptoms are truly BVD-related and treatable.

Theralens® micro-prism lenses must be worn full time for the most consistent and lasting relief.

Patient Success Stories

"I cannot wait to spread the word and be an advocate for Eye Candy Optical. This appointment was not just life-changing—it was inspiring. I left feeling cared for, hopeful, and excited about my vision and future."

"I'm not exaggerating when I say that coming here was

LIFE CHANGING. In 2022, I began having debilitating migraines every 2-3 days. After beginning effective pharmaceutical interventions in 2023, I started having them every 10-14 days.   Now that I have my prism glasses, I'm approaching

THREE MONTHS migraine-free - I never, ever thought I would feel this relief. I'm also calmer, walking straighter, reading more easily, and my dizziness is almost totally gone."

"I’ve only had my glasses for just over a week, but already I feel a significant improvement. No eye pain, I can think clearer, my neck pain went away, I can breathe easier… it’s truly a new life I’m living."
